Exposure Time Limitations

The projector contains an LED structured light source operating at 465nm wave length. The LED chips are driven directly from external power and only marginal internal buffer capacity exists. Please see the X-series power supply topic for further information on the required power supply.

The thermal conditions for passively cooled operation of the projection module require to limit the LED duty cycle to 8% (e.g. 8ms at 10Hz, 16ms at 5Hz, etc.). The maximum duration of a single flash pulse is 10ms. The limits for burst flashes with FlexView are 80ms at 25% duty cycle. The projector electronics actively monitors the LED stress level and ensures that the LED stays in these limits, cutting off the LED current if necessary.

Note: The Capture and Trigger commands will wait until the current LED is ready again for a flash pulse of the currently specified exposure. Thus, software triggering of images might be delayed in order to have constant LED power over the entire exposure time!

Note: Hardware triggering will immediately start the exposure and the LED flash, regardless of the LED stress level. If the LED leaves its safe operating limits during exposure it will be switched off before the end of the exposure time.

Overtemperature Protection

X series projection modules will set the Overtemperature status flag when reaching 75°C on the internal driver electronics. To protect the electronics the duty cycle limit is then reduced gradually down to 1% at 80°C. The camera will remain fully operational, but software triggered images will be delayed longer in order to keep the reduced duty cycle limits. If you run X series projection modules at high duty cycle and high environment temperature it is thus recommended to attach the projection module to some metal structure for better heat dissipation.
